Because those 1950s homes you're talking about out in say the San Fernando Valley(which is City of LA) are going for a lot more than 400K.

Now once you get out of the City of LA and go inland the prices do drop. But you're talking about places like Lancaster, Palmdale to the north and Ontario/Upland to the east.
I've seen a 1000 or 900 square foot house for 280k that was livable in LA. Not even 100 square foot condos in the worst ghetto go for that much in my area. Like I said. If LA didn't have the smog, the oppressively hot weather, and bad traffic I'd go there in a heart beat to own my own home.

Where in LA did you see that, what area?

Smog? It's not longer the 80s, LA is pretty much smog free, and is only "oppressively" hot usually in July, Aug, and Sept, although Oct was warmer than normal. Currently 45 degrees.

I don't know, East LA?
I visited in 2011 and 2013. Both times I rolled down the window on the 101 and i5 I could barely breath. I don't think I could handle LA heat. I get hot in the south bay. I respect your city though. I look at your prices and feel sad we can't be as lucky.

If you get hot in the south bay you may consider summering in the southern hemisphere.

Still. 600k is about Union City/Hayward/San Leandro/East Palo Alto/Oakland grade and those places border on ghetto.
Thabkfully LA isn't as expensive as SF. This isn't anything new.

However, I'm not sure why you are so sure that a mid century modern would be less than the median home. What exactly do you think are the "cool" homes around here?

The McMansions. People like the "Bigger is better" mantra. 1950s modesty is out.

Except you're wrong. I can assure you that buying 7,000 of SPY instead of the Rolex would have been a better "investment"

Forbes Welcome

As a professional talking head on watches I often get asked about investing in watches for profit. The idea that you’ll buy a watch and wait until it increases in value doesn’t made for good sense. Plus, historically it doesn’t happen often even with extremely rare watches.

Not in the inner ring suburbs and central/west LA.

That's what's hot in the SCV or I. E.
