I once took the bus from Brentwood to LAX and I believe it was a little over 2 hours.

I left around 5am or so (maybe even earlier). I don't know what bus lines they were; just looked it up on the Metro site.

I'd recommend a shuttle.

It's allowed--fairly recent change.

In the past month I've been picked up and dropped by Uber at LAX. Much cheaper than a traditional taxi (to DTLA is $55/taxi and $26/Uber-X).

L.A. opens the door for full Uber and Lyft service at LAX - LA Times

Not quite. They are technically allowed by the city, but they now have to through some certifications before they can actually pick up at the airport. Airport regulations this time, not city laws.

You can always be dropped off at the airport with Uber/Lyft.

Is this a new thing? In the past two months I have been picked up by both an Uber-X, as well as Uber Black (which I understand goes through a more stringent check).

The only time I ever took Super Shuttle, the driver kept nodding off in the freeway fast lane -- then waking up with a jolt. Scared the crap out of me. I took the fly-away bus when I got back.

If you are flying into terminal 1 or 7/8 you can walk across Sepulveda (about 1 1/2 block walk) and hail Lyft from there (I've done it several times this year.) Uber's geofence extends farther so it won't work across Sepulveda. I hear the shuttles are hip to Uber/Lyft users and will ask for confirmation that you are a customer. I think it's a sleazy thing to freeload off the shuttles too.

Don't even consider taking Supershuttle, it's seriously not worth the savings. I believe the Flyaway bus the OP is referring to is an express bus that doesn't make any stops between LAX and Hollywood. So it shouldn't take as long as the regular buses that make a gazillion stops. But it will be slower than Uber/Lyft.

I have taken the shuttle to the bus terminal and still was blocked. This was back in October. As far as I'm concerned, those shuttles are paid for with our airline fees, so they are fair game. Besides, this past time, since I could not get Uber/Lyft, I simply took the bus.

I took the Flyaway Hollywood, and what a smooth ride! At 8:15am, just 40 minutes to Hollywood, then I was lucky to arrive at the local bus stop just before the bus came. Total time: 60 minutes. Bellow what the planner predicted! For just $8, since I have the local bus pass.
Things are not so bad as you guys paint.
I was in the queue for super shuttle, and gave up. They tell you to wait and don't even give you an estimate of how long. They could be a little smarter.

I've hailed Lyft from right across Sepulveda several times this year after walking from terminal 1. I hear even north El Segundo residents can't get Uber because of how large their geofence is around LAX. My comment about the shuttles was more about using commercial hotel/parking/rental car shuttles to catch a ride from Uber/Lyft. I heard a lot of people were taking cabs just off the airport property to catch Uber/Lyft so they raised the minimum fare to $10. I'm as cheap as the next guy but I have my limits when it comes to what I'd do to save a few bucks.
