They are considered a "natural monopoly", by definition.

LADWP is absolutely in bed with the politicians. The LADWP union OWNS the politicians. They had that party slush fund and were never held accountable.

Lord know we have problems with LADWP, but, at least there is some accountability.

It seems a long time ago now, but, in 2000 to 2001, there was a big privatization and deregulation in electricity generation in California. This company called Enron shut down half the power plants in the state so that it could cause blackouts and a power panic. And then it jacked up the price of the remaining electricity to make it 10x more expensive. And then they walked away with tens of billions of dollars.

But here in LA, things were much calmer, because the LADWP was a city-owned utility that generated much of its own power, and it wasn't gambling on Enron's power market.

I hope they never privatize the LADWP.
