Downtown LA has the nightlife but the segment of the 5 freeway between Downtown LA and La Mirada is a traffic chokepoint (it widens starting from Anaheim and south), although you may be driving opposite of most of the traffic. not much outdoor space other than concrete sidewalks near skyscrapers. Also, few supermarkets which equals higher prices.

Have you considered Fullerton? It has nice, safe areas to the north as well as a plethora of restaurants in its downtown area. Similarly, there's also Brea, which is also safe and has a nice little downtown area as well as the Brea mall. Both areas will be a short commute to La Mirada and both have plenty of parks/grassy areas. Neither have the urban feel of Downtown LA, but you'll get a nicer apartment for your money.
OP would likely take the 60 fwy to hacienda Bl or Colima rd. Gps shows those routes are quicker than the 5, even though it's lots of surface streets, the 60 is entirely a reverse commute both ways.

There's a Ralph's, a whole foods, a smart and final and a Target in downtown proper and a food 4 less at 6th and Union. Or OP could go grocery shopping on the way home at the albertsons off Wilcox in Montebello or at the Raphs off Atlantic in Monterey Park.

I really appreciate everyone's input. I think I'm gonna go with closer to downtown, as the other options are just too far from everyone I know.

Thanks for your opinion - would you mind expanding on your directions? I didn't quite understand and wasn't able to find them on the map. I'm really interested to see if this route would be better for me. Thanks!

Doesn't show so well on maps but if you take either the 10 or 101 out of downtown, both will offer off ramps onto the 60 fwy(Pomona Fwy) and take the 60 fwy 20 miles east to Hacienda Bl. After a mile or so on Hacienda you will have the option to continue on Hacienda(which then becomes Hacienda Rd) or you can turn on Colima Rd, which goes straight through Whittier and into La Mirada.

I still suggest you check out Downtown and make sure its for you. I love it, but there are homeless people and scammers, even though you will never go near where the worst of it is(Skid Row),

Also suggest you do a dry run in the morning from Downtown to La Mirada. The GPS claims its around a 35-40 minute drive, but you never know until you actually do it. For certain though, the 20 miles on the 60 are a totally reverse commute, and I doubt Hacienda Bl from the 60 into Whittier is a hotbed of traffic in the morning.

Thanks so much for your help! I'll definitely make a dry run.
