Which happens to be the point of why a team would move to LA to be the secondary tenant at a stadium. One superstar and a few playoff seasons in a row, even if they went no further than past one year and rebuild playoff teams that the franchise had previously has given them a money making machine

The team needs fans, but the fans don't need the team. If the team isn't good, the fans can do a million other activities in a big city like LA or NYC. Big cities dont need their sports teams, the sports teams need them. Little cities that don't have much going on are the ones willing to throw money at sports teams so they can be a 'Big League's city. In real Big League cities, the team's pay their own way, and if they don't like it, they leave.

Regardless of that, the Clippers were still able to carve out their niche in LA and have a very solid following and are always profitable. The Chargers can at the very least do that, but since the Rams are nowhere near what the Lakers are, the Chargers have the opportunity to become LA's main team.

I always wished the clips would move to Anaheim, but thanks to the rise of Blake griffin and despite the departure of cp3, the clips have shine a light throughout the LA area. Not only that, but their future is even brighter since they're gonna move to Inglewood (the old Lakers territory)

"Shine a light throughout the LA area" I think you are under the impression that sports play as important a role in everybody's life here as it does your own. Not really, it's just an add on if it plays a part at all. As someone else mentioned, teams may hold more relevance in places where is just nothing else to do.

But loving a home team on a full time basis is like a loving a fine looking woman who welcomes his man with open arms. A great mingling feeling. Unless there's a good reason not to watch them play.

The Rams and Chargers will both draw well in the long run. Even if the teams themselves are not-that-good, a good number of opposing fans will still come to the games. Those Cowboy, Steeler, Bronco, Packer, etc. fans that live in SoCal will now be able to see their teams when they come to town to play either the Rams or Chargers. We went to a Ram game last season when I was visiting family back home. They played the Bills and there were plenty of Buffalo jerseys in the crowd. As far as gaining Ram and Charger fans, that honestly may only come through winning.

Aside from locals showing up, you have to also keep in mind that L.A. is still a sought-after destination for out-of-towners. Giant, Jet, Bear, and Packer fans that can't get tickets to home games may wish to fly out to L.A. to see their team instead. They more than likely would make a full weekend out of it (sightseeing, hanging out, then the game). The same thing will happen when the Raiders hit Vegas in a few years.

As far as the NFL is concerned, they are more concerned about the TV market and money in the end. Since L.A. is the #2 media market, that calls for the league wanting games from both conferences as often as possible. The Rams have nostalgia and familiarity on their side, so they may be able to avoid some blackouts in the cavernous Coliseum. On the flipside, the Chargers' temp home is small enough for them to pretty much not even have to worry about potential blackouts.

The love for the Rams and Chargers may not totally be in L.A. yet, but the love for the NFL as a whole will keep them going in the short term.

I think that is generational.

When I was a child, we were taught by our fathers, uncles, cousins, friends, etc. to pick a team (typically your home team) and to stick with them. Nowadays, I have seen people flip teams almost every other year. Some also follow players instead of teams, but that is another story.

Cable and technology make it easier for someone to jump on the bandwagon and still be able to follow that team on a regular basis.

I'm an outsider, but it seems like LA just isn't a big football town. If it was, the second biggest market in the US wouldn't have lost the Rams and the Raiders in the first place or been without a team for 20 years. Seems like a basketball and baseball town. Am I right? Even when they are not good, the Dodgers and Angels are always near the top in attendance. Of course they have the weather advantage, but still. Has the NHL even surpassed football in popularity?

I remember watching Raiders games on TV toward the end of their time at the LA Coliseum and the place seemed at least half empty.
