How so? There is honestly no reason to tip waitstaff in CA. So if you feel so strongly then you shouldn't tip them either.

You could tip a retail employee for buying a shirt...but would it make sense?

The taxi tipping economy is bolstered by public understanding that drivers take home less than half of fare. Same for waitstaff folk, nationally ~$2/hr base. It was and continues to be supplemental income for the yellow cab types. Given ride sharing services disrupted this model and enable drivers to take home an increased margin as well as offer greater efficiency of lead gen, it's time to rethink that supplemental income. Uber didn't cave and start offering tipping because it's the right thing to do...they caved because drivers balked at the idea and went to Lyft where tipping was enabled.

If anyone is curious: I've tipped 7 of my last 10 rides. The other 3 were either bad service or purely utilitarian service. In no way shape or form did those drivers deserve above their already adjusted rate.

We haven't even gotten into surge rates...

my real point is that I honestly don't think anyone should feel that it's mandatory to tip waitstaff in CA. I agree, why should we all have to tip waiters and not tip the cashier at Target who makes the same wage? The entire concept of tipping is ridiculous.

As a tip I usually advise them either to not play with matches or to not eat the yellow snow.
