I don't want to go off track with this thread but the term "African American", has always bothered me.
Most blacks living in this country were born here.
They are Americans, not Africans.
They are Black Americans.

Fine to celebrate one's culture, but in this case, and this particular area of Los Angeles, their culture is Black American, not African American.
As for a new name for the area, that will take some thought.

Yeah I don’t hear people use the term African American that much anymore . Even politicians .

In the article there was a lady that said Africa Town wouldn’t be appropriate because she doesn’t have a connection to Africa or really have anything in common with the culture .

Similar to say white Americans whose ancestors came from Europe generations ago .. but they don’t really have anything in common with European culture or a connection to Europe .

Yeah , L.A doesn’t seem like it’s a great place to live if one wants to live somewhere with a lot of black majority neighborhoods. Atlanta seems like it might be the best . I believe that city also has the highest rate of black owned business.
There seem to be relatively few in Los Angeles.

It should remain Leimert Park. Naming a little neighborhood after a continent with lots of different countries is ridiculous. What countries in Africa have connections to Leimert Park? Morocco? Guinea? Egypt? Libya? Tunisia, Kenya?

I guess that’s fair if “Asian American” bothers you just as much. And that it bothers you that white people aren’t really white and that black people aren’t really black. And that many people that say that they are “Mexican” or Armenian” or “Persian” were actually born here.

But it sounds like it doesn’t bother you. You’re selectively bothered. Can’t imagine what anyone decides to call themselves in this context would bother anyone.

The people that live there are connected. I think that it’s cool when people feel a connection to their ancestry. Especially one that white people tried so hard to break.
