I'm moving to Seal Beach to live with family for a few months while I get on my feet (my end goal is to move to or near Santa Monica). I'm wondering what the job market is like in that area. I have about two years of retail/food service experience including many months as a barista and maker of smoothies and sandwiches.

Are there a lot of openings like that right now, or is it very hard to get a job? I was thinking of applying at Starbucks, since there are several in the immediate area where I'm moving, but if it's anything like here, there's a looong line to work there and you pretty much have to know somebody [mod cute: language] to get in.

If not retail/coffee shops, what's a good place for someone with my experience to start? Temp agency (got any recommendations)?

i hope you're a college student with great employment prospects upon graduation, because you're going to have to increase your earning potential SIGNIFICANTLY in order to be able to afford to move to santa monica. the average middle-class family in this area can't afford santa monica.

I'm actually planning on moving to or NEAR Santa Monica... to attend school there. :P
Thanks for totally answering my question, by the way.

you'll be able to find that type of work no problem, but it aint gonna pay nearly enough to get out on your own like the previous poster mentioned

I don't want to live by myself in SM on a long-term basis, I just want to roomshare with other SMC students while attending SMC- that could be in or near SM. Me moving to that area will be at least one year from the date of moving to Cali- during which time I'll have next to zero expenses, so I'll be able to save quite a bit.

Try craigslist: los angeles classifieds for jobs, apartments, personals, for sale, services, community, and events. There are probably several jobs downtown LB not far from Seal Beach
