Curious to hear if you think Santa Catalina island is worth a visit? If so how long do you recommend? I was thinking of spending a whole day there. Is that too long?

I visited there several years ago for a day trip and really enjoyed it. Was able to do some hiking and eating/drinking in town. Not sure if I'd want to spend several days there in town, but would probably do that for a camping trip.

I've been to Santa Catalina Islands on two occasions. The first time was a day trip to Avalon more than 40 years ago when I was 10 years old. The second visit took place in 2015 that involved a four-day stay in Two Harbors. Two Harbors is quieter and more laid back than Avalon with more camping opportunities. I stayed at the Banning House, which is a historic bed and breakfast inn with views of Two Harbors and Catalina Harbor. During my stay, I hiked a portion of the Trans Catalina Trail (TCT) to the Parsons Landing campground. I would like to pay a visit to Avalon to see how things have changed since the late 1970s. I'm glad I made the trip. Be sure to try the "Buffalo Milk."

Yep, visited both Avalon and Two harbors as a kid. Both nice and worth a visit.

Of course Avalon will always be the quaint sleepy Island town but how come they never built a kind of playground oasis on the other side- the back of the island? Hotels, bars, nightclubs, casino, etc. Catalina could be amazing if it had more options than Avalon. Could you image hopping a boat to a mini Miami Beach located right off our shores

They didn't because they wanted to keep it as it is, and there are plenty of such amenities on the mainland so who would go in enough numbers? It would turn the nice island into a mess.

Even on a day trip you can see whales.

I would hit up the other islands. Island Packers, in Ventura, can get you over to each of the Islands in the park.

I like Catalina, but I always get seasick going over and back--beware, the ocean is rough as it passes through the channel between the mainland and the island.
