In my opinion one of the few slivers of good that has come during this pandemic is the loophole of outdoor seating that restaurants and bars of outdoor have stumbling upon since the order came out that indoor seating was to be stopped. Its almost Paris like but in California. And truthfully this should've always been a thing here. The great weather with mild breezes that's nearly year round except for about three months of the year. Even driving by a restaurant strip like the one on Washington/Culver Boulevard in Culver City looks great and festive as the people all seem to be enjoying themselves immensely. The neighboring cities nearby like Santa Monica, Redondo, and El Segundo are even allowing entire side streets to be blocked off for outdoor table seating. Who knew. My gut tells me that this stays around and becomes thing post pandemic if that ever occurs. It makes you wonder why we were so cooped up inside when dining in the first place? Yeah there was always a patio seating option but not like this. It adds a new wrinkle to the city but its mind-boggling that it took a global pandemic to discover it.

Interesting that Los Angeles is just now doing this. San Diego has had sidewalk seating for decades and simplified the permit process even further about a decade ago.

It's absolutely unacceptable. Sidewalk is for walking.

Shows you're not in LA - thousands of people live on sidewalks.

We are not talking about homeless people here.

Obviously sidewalks are used for more than walking. Of course you can only understand one concept at a time and even then, not well.

Dont a lot of your restaurants already have? The weather is so nice, you may as well sit outside. Is not like NYC with the high humidity, rain, wind, and snow. Come to think of it I have eaten outside in SoCal a few times. Not in LA, but close. Plus dont you guys have large parking lots you can set up in?

Nothing like the romance of eating in a parking lot, makes ya think of Paris. To be honest, sidewalk eating isn't all that great either if it's literally just some tables and seating placed out onto the sidewalk and thus reducing the actual walking space to a minimum. If you're in an area with high foot traffic (which usually is the case in that scenario) you're getting to eat your pasta or whatever while some smelly a-hole is squeezing past your table. Not pleasant. Ideally the outdoor seating is located on a patio or in a front yard that's separated from the street some way.

In Los Angeles, nearly 1,300 restaurants have received permits to offer outdoor dining of some kind, including 46 that are setting up in parking spaces. The city is reviewing six applications to shut down a street, officials said.

The changes, rolled out in a matter of weeks, are among the most dramatic in decades for a region that rarely prioritizes pedestrians above the demands of rush-hour traffic. And the changes have been easier to put in place because traffic is far lighter than usual.

Whether Southern California’s expanded outdoor dining scene is a permanent shift, or will evaporate when diners can eat indoors again, is “the million-dollar question,” said Madeline Brozen, the deputy director of UCLA’s Lewis Center.

L.A.-area parking spots have become dining areas during the pandemic. Will it last?

I eat like that in NYC, but of course I sit at table furthest from any cars.
