Please recommend between these two places: Long Beach (suggest better areas in both) and Woodland Hills, considering that work will be covering (newswriter) dowtowon LA but won't live there because of schools.
THANK YOU!

Woodland Hills doesn't have a train station nearby but maybe Long Beach does. Did you check metrolink? I think both places have a pretty wide variety of living options. Woodland Hills is hotter in summer and it has virtually no bad areas. Long Beach is cooler and close by to lots of neat things to do but I've read that there are some good areas and some so-so areas.

All of east long beach (El Dorado, Park Estates, etc) and coastal long beach (Belmont, Naples, etc.) is nice. Outside of that Virginia Country Club, Bixby Knolls, etc are nice. LB is huge and the neighborhoods vary from urban to suburban to beachy so you really have to drive around and see what you like.

Just remember that both Woodland Hills and Long Beach are pretty hefty commutes to downtown. I would guess that Woodland Hills is probably close to 1.5 hours each way during normal commuting hours and Long Beach is probably close to an hour. If you will be making this drive everyday, you should certainly consider this when deciding where to live. However, both areas also have mass transit options if you are interested in that. From Woodland Hills you can take the Orange Line bus and red line subway to downtown. From Long Beach, you can take the Blue Line light rail into downtown. From my experiences, both are very convenient and save the headache of the unavoidable stop and go traffic in LA.

Just stay out of the Westside and North Long Beach. I lived in those neighborhoods and they aren't quite peaceful.
