KIPP SoCal Public Schools, which operates 23 charter schools, will close three campuses, a setback for an organization that had grown steadily and is considered a leader in the field.

The shutdowns, which have angered some parents and disappointed many, will take effect at the end of the current school year. The overriding cause is low enrollment — a problem exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and local opposition to charter schools.

Declining enrollment is affecting school systems across California and within L.A. County — including Los Angeles Unified, which has largely resisted shutting down campuses. Parents, community groups and teachers firmly oppose campus closures because schools are centers of a community, typically for generations.

While the roots of charters don’t run as deep, these schools have a strong following, serving about 1 in 5 students who attend public schools within the boundaries of L.A. Unified, the nation’s second-largest school system.

For those who cannot get through the paywall, the schools that are closing are: KIPP Generations Academy, located in Gardena; KIPP Poder Public School located in Montebello, and KIPP Pueblo Unido in Maywood.

We have always gone to charter schools, I dont get why people are against them. The schools that KIPP are closing (never heard of KIPP before this thread) are located in lower income locations. I wonder if that is a contributing factor.

If your child needs special attention, isn't it better to rent a smaller apartment near your job? You'll even be able to go home during lunch time. Isn't it better to spend 3-4 hours in a car daily instead?

I do not think going home during lunch time is feasible at all -- there is a reason the company offers free lunch, dinner, and stay at a nearby 5-star hotel even for the local employees...

One of the high tech companies. All of them offer about the same "benefits" -- if one wants to work, food and lodging are not something one needs to worry about. I know one person who travels and works between offices (in various countries) and stays in 5-star hotels year round, except when he visits his parents on vacation. He is our guide as to which office has the best lunch/dinner/snacks, and when to visit which country on "work assignments".

He is single of course.

Not in Westchester county, NY -- I in fact specifically avoided that high-tax county in my last house hunt.
