Sorry blackss
It is true that L.A. has a lower crime rate than the average but those rates are based on every 100,000 people so it should have a lower rate becouse so much of it is nice or atleast average, but there is no way you could compare the worst parts of L.A. to places like Seattle. The actual ''ghetto'' parts of L.A. are by far among the worst neighberhoods in the country.Ive lived in Seattle for most my life and while it has some areas you wouldnt want to walk through its not even comparable to most other big cities, though I must admit it is worse than what is generaly believed. Those other cities like St.louis and D.C. have some areas that would certainly give L.A.'s ghettos a run for their money. Also Im pretty sure L.A. has gotten much better, not worse.

And now we have a generational thug/gangbanger culture, where it's "okay" and "normal" because mami and papi were banging too.

All low income minority areas in major cities are equally terrible. The ghetto is the ghetto no matter what city your in.

Ugh so much of LA is the ghetto. Skid Row is terrible... I was down there not too long ago donating some clothes to the Women's Center and they have just been dumping newly released prisoners down there, mental patients it's just so sad. South Central has always been bad Watts, Compton, got lost there once and a bum with a squeegie wanting to wash my windows for money jumped on my car hood when I said no... I just hate LA... it's like one big city dump.

This happens in a lot of cities. It's called "creating a job." What I've always found interesting about LA is the crews of homeless people who will help you find street parking (if you tip them) in the most crowded areas downtown.

I was a cop working in Watts 3 years ago, and it was the most dangerous ghetto in the United States as a whole. It had 3 times the reported s****tings than camden, new jersey(most dangerous city). and twice the amount of robberies in Detroit. The problem with the demographics is they lay out murders including areas like west l.a. malibu, and other upscale areas. But at the national police conference that was held, demographics are seperated into neighborhoods, and watts was voted most dangerous, with police officers 30% more likely to be killed than even in Camden, New Jersey

Thanks for your insider's information, JamalJohnson. Wow. I applaud your bravery to work in such a dangerous environment to better everyone's safety.

I have a question perhaps you can answer: are there any community/ anti-gang programs that you feel are actually effective or starting to work there to help the beleaguered residents of Watts? (there's a guy on another thread here who wishes to move here to help instigate community programs with a sports enphasis to help youth work out their frustrations in a good physical way.) If you can think of any, please go to the Watts Up thread here to help him brainstorm how to get started really helping the community if you can think of a few programs or links online.

Now I see why city officials changed the name to South Los Angeles, due to the notorious reputation with street warfare.

From the city of Compton:

"Compton is a great place to live, work, and raise a family. It is home to almost 100,000 citizens. Known as the “Hub City” because of its unique position in almost the exact geographical center of Los Angeles County, Compton is strategically located along the Alameda Corridor, a passageway of 25 percent of all U.S. waterborne international trade. Compton is rapidly emerging as a large industrial center in Los Angeles County for transit and distribution, business services, high technology, home and lifestyle products, metals, financial services, and textile manufacturing.

This is an exciting time for Compton. The City is developing a wide range of economic and cultural opportunities that will help to make Compton a prime destination for residents and businesses.

This website is designed to deliver timely and relevant information on the city for citizens and other interested organizations. Contained here is information on City events, council meetings, upcoming events, and who to contact for city services. Visitors to the City’s website can easily subscribe to the Compton Vista newsletter, download applications for licenses, and request City services 24 hours a day!"
