I've done a fair bit of hiking and camping, but, I've never really spent much time in the Angeles National Forest. It is too close, I guess.

So my question is this: how far away from civilization can one get in the Angeles NF? Are there places that you can hike that will put you a good distance from the roads and buildings? Or that truly feel like the backcountry?

You might have better luck in the Los Padres National Forest. I like to do some star gazing at night and too much light pollution from the city will limit your options. I have had pretty good luck driving highway 33 out of Miner's Oaks in Ventura County.

In Angeles National Forest, I haven't had as much luck. Too much light pollution from LA.

There is something in Angeles Forest that you might find very interesting:

There are a few very rugged and remote areas of the Angeles National Forest where you can get the feeling you are "away from civilization." Lots of good hiking books for the local moutains including Trails of the Angeles: 100 Hikes in the San Gabriels. A section of the Pacific Crest Trail goes through the Angeles National Forest. Check out Angeles National Forest - Welcome!.

Happy Trails

Try ebay or google for old Angeles National Forest maps. I seen in the 70's how each year roads were deleted. I need to go thru my old maps and scan them someday.
