Forgot CalTech.

I went to USC, and I prefer it to UCLA ...but the USC surroundings are slummy.

Among academics...don't care about the general public...most of them don't know about CalTech or the Claremont Colleges. If you're looking for an LA based "network" then CalTech or the Claremonts won't be the best choice. If you're looking to get into serious graduate programs, the following list is accurate. Obviously field matters significantly but since you don't specify there's no way to give you a more specific ranking. NOTE: there is a bigger difference between UCLA and USC than there is CalTech and UCLA (IMO).

1. CalTech
2. Claremont Colleges
3. UCLA
4. USC
5. Everyone Else

You know we are all answering the OP as if he/she plans to go to one of these schools.. We have no idea why he asked the question and we have no idea what he considers a good school, what he is looking for. Does he want all around, does he want academics, is he into the sciences or does he plan on majoring in business or finance? Does he want some partying or is he a very serious student. OP, let us know more about your motives and what you are looking for.

Nita

How far outside of LA are you looking? I went to U of Redlands (Redlands, ~80 miles east of the beach), and got, what I feel, was a great education. Small school, seems to really care about the students there.

Its pricey, small, and "far" away, but worth looking into.

Aren't Loyola and Pepperdine also supposed to be very good schools?

And UC Irvine?

Yes, I think they are. Again, all depends on good for what. UC Riverside is also excellent for certain fields, although overall it doesn't have the national/international reputation of UCLA.

We are awash in good colleges.
If I were shopping now it would depend on how much it cost, how much financial aid I could get, and which college had the best school in my chosen field.
CalTech is fantastic if you are.
USC, UCLA, Peperdine, Occidental, CSUN, Loyola, Claremont Colleges...all have strong suits in an array of price ranges.
