Best for what field? State school? Private? Religious? Big school? Small school? Asking what is the best school is like asking what is the best car.

Exactly right. Best for what? Best for you? Best for someone else? There are way too many variables to consider, and no one can give you a "best" answer without knowing "best for what." There are a lot of colleges and universities in the greater LA area, from UCLA to USC to Occidental to Caltech to Scripps to Pasadena City College to.. well, on and on.

pretty much you have named the ones that come to my mind. I really don't know if I would have Oxy on the list, but you live in Ca I don't. I would say, as for best known: of course USC and UCLA are at the top..

Caltech is the best college in the area, but you gotta be a rocket scientist to get in to it

The three most well known and respected are UCLA, USC, and Cal Tech.

Well known in the liberal arts field are the Claremont Colleges which include Pomona College, Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, etc.... Very selective liberal arts school (think Pomona takes 12% or something).

Then there are the Cal State schools like Cal State Long Beach, Cal State Northridge, Cal State Dominguez Hills, etc....

Occidental College is a good liberal arts school, but not as good as the top Claremont Colleges.

Very true and it isn't good for all fields.

USC but the area surrouding it, is kind of shady. UCLA or Cal Tech if location is a huge deal for you.

Claremont McKenna is by far the most highly regarded institution in the Los Angeles area, but also University of Southern California, UCLA, and California Institute of Technology area outstanding as well. It really depends on your interests as to which is the best fit. If you are interested in business Claremont McKenna is the one to go to if possible, UCLA would be second best. If you are interested in medicine or health care, UCLA is the way to go. If you are interested in tech, well obviously California Institute of Technology is the way to go. If you like accounting, you cannot do too much better than UCLA or USC.
