I am thinking of moving to LA and was told that Long Beach is a decent place for a single 30 year old female. I don't want to pay rent more than $1300/month and someone told me this would be a good place. I know NOTHING about the area and want to find out more. Crime, things to do, etc......
If Long Beach is not a good place can anyone tell me what is?
Thanks!!!!!!!!

What sort of work do you plan on doing? So much depends on a job.

2nd & 3rd run East & West. The higher the number, the better the area. I would recommend the EAST 3000 block and up.

I make exception for the Villa Riviera, a beachfront Gothic masterpiece:

Downtown area has been gentrifying at an unbelievable rate. Longtime LB residents remain prejudiced but the change has been huge.

You are right :-) I was mainly speaking of 2 & 3rd Street. Ocean Boulevard has wonderful high rises.

I worked in one of those high rises many years ago on Ocean Blvd. On a clear day, you could see all the way to Catalina Island.

Laura, much of Long Beach is a sewer. But if you stay around the "Belmont Shore" area, you will be just fine. It's a nice SoCal beach community with a bit of an urban twist. You mentioned 2nd/3rd St and Ocean Blvd, and those are all fine areas.

You can find a 1-bedroom apt in your price range with no problem.

Stay away from anything north of downtown. It's full of ethnic types, gangs, and crime.
