I thought it would have increased during the recession.

Los Angeles County's homeless population is down by 38% -- latimes.com

i was suprised by this. i have seen a drop in the homeless pop, particularly down town, but
i did a double take when i read the article in the times today.
the double take came courtesy of the word "county". i thought the stat was for the city.
it would make sense if that were the case, considering what i had heard, read and seen... LA was pushing its homeless out of the city into neighboring parts of the county. my understanding was that they were just being moved east and south.

but maybe the COUNTY is pushing them outward.
i wonder where they are going.

didnt they just open a new center in skid row...

They must be bailing. I wonder where to?

Probably to the same places the working poor and middle class are bailing to. If I had to guess.

Probably to some of the states that offer them a little more for their lack of money.

Probably either two things:

1) Times are so hard they're finally biting down and asking family/friends for help

2) Cannibalism

They all moved to Laguna Beach to live in the park on the sand.

I read an article a couple of weeks ago that said it was cheaper for the state/city to find housing for people than it was to let them live on the street.

Whoever did the survey followed several homeless people for a few years. The money spent on emergency room visits, jail time, and whatever else, cost more than putting them up in housing. It actually made sense since the biggest problem a lot of these people face is homelessness (or maybe we should call it "house-lessness.")

When I first moved to LA, back in 1982, we were going through a really bad recession. I remember driving through downtown and seeing families with little bitty kids (like 2 years old) on the streets at 2 a.m. It really made me sad.

Our country can do better than this.

I'm glad they are trying during this recession.

Which would be to states like mine where you can get a mansion stocked with good beer, servants, and a 3 Mercedes garage all for only $299. a month!

In other news, San Francisco just gained 42,694 homeless people. It is thought they are from L.A. because they all look this:

Hipster or Homeless?
