New Yorker - Job relocation to LA office in westwood/beverley hills. HELP!!! (Los Angeles: apartment, rent)

Given your moniker, should we assume that you'll still be working in financial services as a trader? If so, don't you work a bit off hours? Earlier to/from the office? If that's the case, you might be able to expand your search considerably if you have to be at your desk at 6am and are done by 3pm, for example.

I just typed a long response and lost it when I logged in (hate that!) - so rather than type it again, I also have a 4 year old daughter starting kindergarten this year and would be happy to share with you my views on why you would be better off choosing a valley area (some stated above) over living in Los Angeles, given your requirements above. Yes, I do work in the financial industry. I believe my hours will be 4:30AM - 3:30PM PST. How bad would the trafficebe from San Fernando to Beverly Hills during those hours?

Would I be able to find a place where i can take public transportation to work? I wouldn't mind a 45 minutes public transportation commute to work if any and live in a great (schools), inexpensive neighborhood like san fernando valley or maybe in south pasadena.

Beverly Hills has decent bus access, BUT (and here's the big but...) it's only by bus (which sit in the same bad traffic as everyone else), and from somewhere like South Pasadena it would take you forever to get there (it would take a long time driving, too, for that matter); you'd have to go downtown and transfer to another bus; not sure what the total commute time would be like, but I'm assuming at least 1 1/2 hours each way. I'm not sure about buses from the above-mentioned parts of the SFV.

Now that I think about it, the public transportation commute would be even more difficult with your hours. Public transportation isn't too bad in LA, but the night/early morning schedules are pretty restricted. It would be an easy early morning drive from South Pasadena, though, although going home in the evening wouldn't be as pleasant.

You will have a easy morning commute. But afternoon can be ROUGH. But at least it is better than 5 o'clock traffic.

Oh man! This is tough. Looking for:

1. Nice Neighborhood
2. Good Schools
3. $1500 - $1800 housing costs
4. Easy Commute

Relocating is much harder than i thought. I guess I'll keep looking at my options. I plan to move by March.

Unfortunately, you are working in a very challenging location. Pick any two: Close, affordable, good schools.

If it's close and good schools, then it's expensive. (Beverly Hills, Bel-Air, West LA)
If its good schools and affordable, then it's a bad commute. (Simi, Santa Clarita, Conejo Valley)
If it's close and affordable, then it's bad schools. (South of Wilshire, East of La Brea)
