I have recently moved to LA from the UK on a 12 month work contract. The company I'm working for is based in Northridge, SFV and I'm looking for somewhere to live (rent) which is no more than 40 minutes from work and is lively i.e has bars, restaurants, shops etc. I’m here on my own and looking to get out and meet people. My work colleagues have recommended Sherman Oaks and other people I have met have suggested Encino, Studio City and even Brentwood. I have visited each of these places and think somewhere along Ventura Boulevard would be ok and Brentwood seems nice especially as it is close to the sea. Can anyone offer any further advice?

I'd stay north of the Santa Monica Mountains to save yourself the headache of commuting through the Sepulveda Pass. Concentrate your search around Ventura Blvd. I'd say Ventura east of the 405 freeway is a bit hipper than west of the 405 freeway. I'd start your search in Studio City and move on from there.

I agree with LASam, the area around Ventura Blvd between the 405 and 170/101 freeways has a lot going on and is just a short drive over the hill into hollywood and the more happening parts of the city.

Anything along Ventura Blvd is desirable because you won't find any "BAD NEIGHBORHOODS" within a half mile of the boulevard. Sherman Oaks would bring you close to the 405, but Studio City is brimming with culture...take your pick! Northridge is quite nice near its shopping mall, but if you like the "walkable" feel....like strolling down the block to Starbucks or a pub, then stay near Ventura boulevard if you can afford it!

And that being said..... Welcome to the USA!
