I know "cheap" living in SoCal is a fantasy, but where are the cheapest places with reasonable safety (I'm in Detroit so I can rough it a bit)

Several things make someplace cost relatively less: crime, schools, distance from jobs, climate, size of lot, size of structure, etc

What are your boundaries of "Southern California"? It wouldn't make sense for us to suggest Piru if your job is in Orange County for example.

Here's a graphic which shows all recent sales SFR, $100K-$125K, 4BR, with at least 2000 square feet. (I had to filter like this to keep the results under 500, Redfin's limit, but it probably still gives an indication of the locations.)

I live in the North Side of Oxnard and it has always felt safe to me and many that I know. You can buy a brand new Condo for $260,000 at the new River Park Development.

You can also buy a 3 bed 2 bath home with 1350 Square feet built in 1973 for $300,000.

On the less desirable South end of the city I have seen 3 bed 2 bath homes in the $200,000 range.
