They were saying on the news just last night about how the Baton Rouge area has become the most populous in the state.

It has, EBR parish is the most populated in the state, followed by Jefferson parish. City proper population differs though. Its sad to see Orleans parish suffer so badly just from the storm, at least the people could have settled in other Louisiana cities.

That's mainly what happened. That's why the Northshore (St. Tammany) and the River Parishes (St Charles, St John) posted growth. The GNO area shrunk, but it's still the biggest.

But the other 200,000 basically dispersed to Houston and Atlanta.

Many people migrated to St. James, Ascension, and East Baton Rouge Parishes so they'll be counted with BR and a lot migrated to Tangipahoa which is counted by itself. I'd take a wild guess and say that maybe 120,000 are out of state with the majority in Houston, followed by Dallas, and then Atlanta.

Looking forward to the release of more data, such as MSA and CSA numbers, but for the top 20 cities and parishes, this Excel file gives the numbers:

The New Orleans area will re-grow.

I am expecting Alexandria to grow a little more due to the International Airport (AEX)

As for as the census goes: I wish I could trust the stats. I think it will take another 10 years to get a real clear picture of the demographics. I still believe thousands of people are still traveling around -- an unsettled demographic, in my opinion.

I am located in Alexandria. I can tell that the population grew just by driving in traffic over the years.

Two towns flying under the radar, as for as population and economic growth: Many, LA and Coushatta, LA.
