Where are the bad parts of these two cities? More specifically, what neighborhoods have a lot of issues with property crime?

I'll give it a shot for Baton Rouge:
(1) North of Florida Blvd, especially before you get to Airline
(2) The areas around Gardere Lane
(3) Boulevard De Province - it's between Old Hammond and I-12 east of Sherwood
(4) Areas north of LSU
(5) An "apartment city" north of Florida Blvd near Flannery called "La Belle Aire"

North Baton Rouge is SCARY! I have no idea about New Orleans though. I live in south Baton Rouge and feel VERY safe here!

New Orleans is safest...Uptown between St. Charles and Magazine although I wouldn't call it safe. I know there have been various incidents in the Quarter I feel perfectly safe there, walking around at night even.

What does anyone think about the "Coursey" area to work and/or live? I'll be visiting B.R. this weekend and just wanted to know.

Coursey's (in general) pretty decent, if you're talking about the area between Sherwood and Jones Creek. Mixture of single family homes, apartments, and condos. The traffic congestion (esp near Sherwood) is a problem, though.

I'm not crazy about some slummy apartments on Coursey at Southpark, although you DO have a police station right there. And there are some section 8s at Cedarcrest/Coursey.

Coursey is fine, I agree with BR Man. If you go there, Dempsey's rest. on Coursey has great food!
