Hey guys! I've been searching through here the past year alot of my questions have been answered but it seems My husband and I are so uncertain on location of our relocation we are hoping for some advice!
We are looking to leave Michigan (Lower - Ann Arbor/ Metro Detroit Area) For a fresh start in Louisiana.

We have big hopes for Lafayette and any rural -safe- surrounding area.(But we arent familiar with Louisiana and open to all suggestions!!)
We are looking for any suggestions to safe citys a little about us to narrow it down:
We are both in the Office Administration field - looking for general rent apt/home in the $600-$800 (more of course if we find a big rental home in which we are open to $800 and up.
We have one child -6 years old so public school with a good rep is second to neighborhood safety!
We live approx 20 mins from downtown but live in a quiet rural area - are there lots of places like that down there?
We love culture diversity, food, music and a good time!
Anyone originally from Michigan that can tell us how much of a change it is?
and of course i have to ask - Whats with all the cockroaches/cockroach talk?! Is it the whole state, only southern areas? I am well aware the different climate will attract more bugs i just dont know how i feel of welcoming a infestation of cockroaches (YIKES!) I have been to Florida plenty and understand the big ol' flying ones and they dont freak me out as much.

Sorry for my rambling, & Thanks in advance for your help!

Lafayette is a safe city with exactly what you're looking for as far as food, music, and a good time. I'm not sure about schools but the metro area has some great ones. The roaches aren't a problem as long as you're clean. You will occasionally see them while you're out but it's not a problem whatsoever.

Expect rent to be higher than you might expect in Lafayette. Ditto for traffic.

When you choose a rental, pay attention to what utilities, if any, are included in the rent. An apartment with a face-value rent less than another unit may be more expensive to live in if the 2nd one pays for water/sewer and the first does not. I suffered sticker shock at my first water/sewer bill (the sewer price is tagged to your water consumption), and implemented strict conservation practices thereafter.

If you choose an apartment - ask in advance if the complex is accessible to LUS fiber internet. Some of the really large complexes here are not, so you may pay big bucks for internet via Cox. I can get LUS - at $35 per month for very fast, always reliable internet access.

Lafayette is a wonderful place to live - but be ready for such surprises.

You'll like Lafayette. It has everything; culture, Cajuns, wonderful food, catahoulas and good schools.
It's rooted in oil & gas field support so has unlimited opportunities.
It's a colloge town, so the economy is steady. Home to PHI & Acadian Ambulance, and a nice airport of its own.
Being at I-10 & Highway 90 is convenient.
If it were on the water, I'd have moved back there instead of Slidell.
I guaaaarantee you'll like it!
