Hi. We are thinking of buying a vacation/retirement home in Natchitoches. We fell in love with the area while on vacation. Any suggestions on Real Estate agents, neighborhoods....Thanks

MODERATOR: Sorry, no Realtor or company recommendations are allowed in the state forums...neighborhoods are fine, though!

Try Moss Hill Terrace (and similar neighborhoods) on Sibley Lake on the west side of Natchitoches. Sibley Lake is the city water-supply reservoir and the lakeside property is mostly mature tree-covered hills and very beautiful. Do a Google search "sibley lake natchitoches" for more info. Lakefront property may be scarce but is usually available.

Cane River Lake frontage (Cane River Lake, which "runs" through downtown Natchitoches and adjacent areas, is actually an oxbow lake formed when the Red River changed course many years ago) property is more in demand and may be somewhat expensive. Again, you can do a Google search, add "realtors" ("cane river natchitoches realtors") to your description and you should get some hits. What might be even better than those 2 places is some property on the Red River just east of Natchitoches. But, right now, even I can't find any of that. Maybe one of the readers here can help you out. Get a place on that river, get yourself a boat, enjoy some fantastic fishing and you can also head north (on the river) to the casinos in Shreveport and Bossier City or south all the way to New Orleans.

Natchitoches is the oldest "settlement" in the Louisiana Purchase, older even than New Orleans, and extablished before the Acadians (Cajuns) arrived in 1755 in south Louisiana. Natchitoches was first settled in 1714, by the French, and still has a prominent French look similar to New Orleans. But, you already knew that didn't you?

Hopefully you're aware that Natchitoches, like all southern towns, gets very hot in the summer but AC's, ice tea, cold beer and good, friendly neighbors make up for the hot weather.

Hope you can find something. By the way, I've been thinking about a summer place some place up near Oregon or Washington. Any suggestions?

Thank you very much for your suggestions. We fell in love with the area, and hope we can make our dream a reality in the next year. My husband's family is from the New Iberia area, and he spent a lot of time there as a boy. While visiting Louisiana we both felt as if we were going home...

What are you looking for in a vacation home in Oregon? I have lived here all my life, and would love to be of assistance. Let me know your thoughts, and interests.

Have a great day, and thanks again for your help.

I'm looking for a place for one person, just for the months of August and September (or mid July through early October during the peak of our hurricane season). Just after evacuating when hurricane Rita hit down here in southeast Texas, I was browsing the internet and I had run across a little place in eastern Oregon that was on either a river or lake and had a view of the mountains. It seemed like maybe an ideal spot to escape the heat of this area and free me of having to make any more evacuations. But now I've forgotten the name of the town. Very beautiful place if the photos on the internet were real. I'll do some Googling and see if I can locate the place again. I'm not looking for anything fancy but just a place to be comfortable, a place where there's a bar or 2, some good places to eat, and some nice roads to ride a bike.

What keeps the economy going down there? I live in Phoenix, but we may be shipping my Thoroughbred stallion to stand at stud there. I know I'm going to miss him terribly, but I'm not retired and I'm not well off by a long shot (anyone who owns horses will tell you that the way to make a small fortune in horses is to start out with a BIG fortune in horses!), so we would have to find work there.

Any suggestions? And how hot is hot? What percentage of humidity? I used to live outside D.C. and I know humid.

Default Hot?

How hot is it? Well, we recently went through a 12 day stretch with the high over 100 every day and the heat index was about 112 on average The humidity varies and can be near miserable which is why thing happen at night, when it's lower and temp is cooler. Nobody much moves till Noon on weekends except to attend Mass.

IT"S HOT...but then in the winter, it seldom gets to freezing....

Is there only one Christian religion in Natchitoches?
