I'm planning a road trip in which I will be going through Louisiana and on into Alabama. I'm finding that the costs of hotels is cheaper in Baton Rouge than New Orleans. While I want to visit New Orleans, I am wondering if I should stay in Baton Rouge instead. Is there anything to see there, or should I just stick with New Orleans? Also, what are the parts of either city that I should stay out of as far as safety (as in, I'm coming from Chicago and am used to living in the city, but also don't want to stay in an area with tons of crime). Thanks!
