Interracial couple interested in leaving the south and we are wondering how life is in Louisville and how the job market (Lexington: fit in)

is also? I work in home healthcare and used to be a waitress and bank teller. He is a welder and Hazard Materials "guy" ..whatever that is. Anyway we are looking to move soon and we are considering there. Any viewpoints on Kentucky or advice would help. Thanks a bunch!!

People get angry when I say this but....there's KY, and then there is Louisville. It's like cats and dogs or peas and carrots. Two different animals. That said, Louisville is a fine place for interracial couples just as any major city is. Also, the job market was not hit as hard as some of the coastal cities. Healthcare jobs are especially easy to find. Your man will have a more difficult time but if he shows patience, then he will find work.

Lousiville is considered the South by many people living there. I disagree but was corrected so not sure how far you have to go to be in the north.

Agree with both prior posts. You will be fine in Louisville as to being an interracial couple. Probably also in Lexington and northern Kentucky, but certainly in Louisville.

Louisville is odd in that we really don't fit in with the south or the north or the east or the west. If I were pushed, I'd say the south, but about as far north as you can go without leaving the south.

My nod for Louisville. Born and raised in Michigan, I wasn't too keen on getting assigned to Fort Knox. Yes, there is Kentucky and then there is Louisville. I spent as much time as possible in Louisville and ended up loving it. As for the rest of Kentucky: generally nice people . . .definitely southern hospitality . . . not really my cup of tea - a little too rural - but that's okay. I had heard some bad stuff about some towns, particularly Shepardsville, but truthfully didn't encounter any problems (and I'm black).

Louisville is weird in that it's hard to link it culturally to a specific region. Again, being from Michigan, I consider anything south of Indianapolis to be the South - or, anywhere that sweet tea is served year-round. I met a number of native Kentuckians who consider themselves from the midwest so it all depends on your vantage point.

What does anyone think about a mixed family living near Ft Knox, KY ? My husband is getting out the Army and might get a DOD job on Ft Knox.

You know, I have to tip my hat to the military for being progressive on racial matters. They always seem to be ahead of the curve in this area.

I can't speak from personal knowledge, but my guess is that a mixed family will have no trouble within the military community.

I live under 10 minutes from Ft. Knox and half of my street is mixed couples. The local attitude in Hardin County and Ft. Knox is very tolerant of mixed couples and diversity. The county to the east of Hardin (Bullitt) is a whole another story from what I hear.
