I am a student at Texas Tech and I need a place to hunt deer,any varmits,birds,or arrowheads around the Lubbock area (San Marcos: transferring to)

Hello my name is Dillon. I have lived in Aledo texas all my life right outside of fort worth. I am going to school at Texas Tech University here in about a month. I have hunted and fished all of my life and i do not have anywhere to hunt out this way near (the Lubbock area.) I do know that there is no hunting in Lubbock but i am wiiling to travel a ways. I am very experienced in gun safety and clean up after myself. So if anyone would like to help me out i would greatly appreciate it. I know hunting on someone eles land is a priveledge and i would like the opportunity to earn my keep.

People come from all over to hunt around Paducah and Matador. You might call the Chamber of Commerce and talk with them, see if they can put you in touch with someone...that's the 'major industry' in that area right now. There is also deer hunting up and down Red River around Quanah (Bertha Woods at the Chamber there is very helpful). If you're interested in feral hogs, call Vickie at the Tumbleweed in Quanah...she buys all the hogs people trap (kill?).

There are alot of better, more fun activities than to kill animals. There's got to be something in Lubbock or at Tech that would hold your interest more than doing something as destructive as hurting an animal.

Hunting is much more than 'killing' animals and for those who think that is all to it probably have no business hunting.

With that said 'hunting for arrowheads' is something I did as a child and is great fun.

haha. Yeah well if this offends you then don't even look at it, just sayin. Arrowheads are a true passion of mind and is a great time looking for them.

The farmers will appreciate any feral hogs you can remove from their cropland.......they are very destructive. And thinning out the deer population is doing the deer a favor - the food supply is not sufficient to feed all of them. And donating the deer meat to the local food banks is much appreciated, too - lots of the people in those areas have an inadequate food supply, too.

I've seen Indian grave mounds on a ranch near Macadoo (sp?), which isn't terribly far from Lubbock, but of course that was private land. And that's the problem, I think -- you'll have a hard time finding places you can hunt arrowheads in the South Plains and Panhandle without trespassing. I suppose you could go up to Palo Duro Canyon, where there were certainly Indians living, but the canyon may be pretty well mined-out, so to speak. I'm afraid the OP is moving to the wrong part of Texas for outdoor pass-times such as hunting and fishing. IME West Texans tend to go up to Colorado or sometimes NM for those activities. Maybe transferring to Texas State University (San Marcos) would be something to consider down the road. There may be some opportunities for quail hunting in season in the Panhandle, probably more on the High Plains than the South Plains, I would think. You'd have to check around, maybe do a websearch, etc.

^^^ Actually, there is quite a bit of hunting in the area, especially off the Caprock, for deer, feral hogs, quail, and doves. Lake Alan Henry is supposed to be pretty good for fishing as well.

I'm not too into it, but my dad hunts some, and the best way to find hunting grounds would be through connections. You might want to check out Hunttrader - "Hunt more, Spend less. Make a friend, Trade a Hunt!". Some people I know started the site, and there seem to be quite a few members in the area.
