Hi!!
I am moving from the East Coast to Madison this summer and I am currently apartment hunting. I came across the apartment complex called Sequoya Commons in the Westmorland neighborhood. I am very interested in the place (it goes for 1100 for 1BR including parking). but I am just a little worried about the neighborhood. From looking at the google map/earth, it doesn't seem like there are that many shops/stores around that area. Also, is that neighborhood safe to live it if I am a single female?

If anyone has heard of the ppl experiences living there and don't mind sharing, I'd really appreciate it. I just don't have time to go check it out physically (plane tix too expensive) but I assume that the apartment should be new given that the building is just 1 year old.

Thanks a lot of all your input. I can't wait to move to Madison!

It is a very nice neighborhood and very safe. Not to say you don't want to be aware of your surroundings when in the parking lot, but that is just common sense. Right across the street is a building full of specialty shops and a public library branch.

One of the best grocery stores in the city, Metcalf's, is only about 1-2 miles down Midvale Blvd. and you are very close to the West Towne mall area which has just about every store you could think of. You are also reasonably close to Monroe Street where there is a Trader Joe's and a myriad of little shops and restaurants.

All the above is true BUT there is very little within walking distance other than the handful of random stores in the complex. In other words, you will have to drive everywhere...albeit under 10 minutes, for pretty much everything. Again, not a bad thing, just not within immediate walking distance of a wide variety of places. If you want that, look at places around Hilldale Mall, Sheboygan Ave, etc.

Thank you so much for all your inputs. I am bringing the car with me so I guess driving to stores are okay. I would love to hear what people have heard about or their experiences living at the Sequoya Commons complex there if anyone knows.

I'm not familiar with the complex you mentioned but I found a place off Greenway Boulevard that goes for less then what you posted... I pay 1015 for a 1 bedroom per month... 995 without a dog (I just got a dog.) I love it, I can walk to Greenway Station and have dinner, lunch.. Get some shopping out of the way... Many places within walking distance. I enjoy where I live, I didn't look at anything that was really within Madison as I wanted to be on outskirts of town. I looked at east and west... Both have pro's and con's...

The best store in the city is subjective depending on what one is looking for!

Sequoya Commons is a great location if you don't mind driving a bit for many things. I have not been inside any of the aprtments but the building is only a couple of years old and the neighborhood very safe, and the stores and public library are in the building, not across street even. I like the location better than Greenway Blvd because even though there are fewer stores you can walk to, it is only a short drive or bike ride to many more places of interest, such as downtown, the campus, Hilldale etc.
