Outsider that caught this on the front page.

I think all apartments do a credit check.

I found by last 3 apartments on craigslist. A private home with a basemant may be your best bet.
You also may find an addition to a house (separate apartment) or a private floor.

Good luck in your search!

I am pretty sure John is right. Even my friend who owns a 2 flat does credit checks.

Craigslist may be your only hope. That's where most of the rentals are published, at least in my area. Probably in Madison too.

Not every private owner checks but I think many do. Sadly your choices are going to be limited.

Might find more flexibility in a sublet and be able to continue on as long as you can make your payments.

if you can get a cosigner and then make timely rent payments for a year, you will have a good reference, which might even out the lack of a credit score.

OP, this may not be of much help, but any chance for you to be a roommate with someone else when you get in town? That in itself wont help your score but it will get you in a place and give you some time to perhaps start building it up via other methods. And at some point maybe get your name on a lease, etc.

just thinking out loud.
