will places like restaurants etc still be open? We would like to make a trip up but hubbie thinks everything will be closed up. I'm thinking that doesn't happen until late OCt when the cruise ships stop coming.....

I think most seasonal businesses close around Columbus Day/mid-October, so you should be fine. It's (IMO) the best time to visit- less crowds, crisp weather, and gorgeous foliage- maybe I'll see you there!

Note to Eastport: Don't hire tinbender as your publicist. But since we're on the subject, are the sidewalks still put out in the morning in October?

Enjoy your trip Kate! You'll love it!

Default best time

September early Oct is the best ever time to visit Acadia. Of course every season is the best time to visit when your in the area.

Even on cool days, Sand Beach can be as hot as July as it seems to have its own microclimate.

Pick an Uncle Henry's when you cross the border.
Cheapest gas in Portsmouth on alternate rt 1 and at the Kittery circle. Enter maine head for alt 1, leave Maine, get gas and come back over the Kittery bridge.

Carriage roads!!

Jordan pond house is worth a visit. Can you say popovers?

Geddys on main st in BH near the waterfront is good eats.

Stop at Blueberry Hill ice cream on the way in from Ellsworth.

A stop at Thompson Isl ater a take out a Trenton lobster pound.

The Sea Dog in downtown Bangor along the waterfront is worth the visit if you crossover to 395 form 95.

Swing by Cutler on the way to Eastport and hike the public land on the cliffs. You have to check out the tide changes in ? Quoddy head state park? The whirlpools, reversing falls are out of Prince Valiant or Ulysses.

I'd show up just in time to do a bit of bowhunting, trout fishing and partridge hunting all in the same day. Now that is a trip!

Oops, and then there is the rest of Maine you shouldn't miss.

If you do nothing else, go outside when it gets dark, dark, dark and look up at the stars!!!!!! See all the shooting stars?

Lot of NJ transplants running shops in BH. Came across a guy working at the College of the Atlantic from NJ. Stop in there for a quick visit.

The Acadia Island bus runs until September 30. Most motels are open until October 30, as are many restaurants. After that, they start to gradually fade away so that very few restaurants are open in the the dead of winter. Even the Reel Cinema closes after Christmas for a few weeks. Best time to have a party is in Mid January when only the Hannaford market is open. ;-)
