Any state not bordering the ocean (big lakes do not count) is unliveable so a bunch of those are off the list. Secondly New Jersey is high on the list which is a travesty. The list has little credibility IMHO.

I agree that if a state hasn't a ocean coast it doesn't have anything, and much as I ponds, lakes, streams, and the like, they don't compare to the ocean.
However, New Hamshire does have ocean coast, albeit only a tiny bit, which is over developed, and over developed with mostly ugly architecture, and just plain crowded.
Too bad, because it NH always sounded really attractive to me.
But it is a strange list--althoough except for Utah and New Jersey (a waste of Atlantic coastline!) in the top ten, the other eight states make sense if you don't count the ocean factor.
If Maine abandoned it's welfare mentality, encouraged business, cut tax rates, rebuilt the roads, repealed puritanical "Blue laws", harvested its' resources and promoted growth it could someday be as liveable as New Hampshire.
Hey!! NJ is my home state, be nice! I lived there for 22 years (and I'm only 23!). It's got some of the best towns in the country to raise a family, and offers an overall extremely high quality of life. The dirty parts that it is known for throughout the country is basically just New York runoff.

And it's coastline would be just as overdeveloped and crowded, too.

Sorry, but New Jersey is the most densely populated state in the union.
In fact, it has more people per square mile than Japan or India.

On that basis alone, NJ is ruined beyond repair.
While that statement about density is true, there are lots of areas where there is open space and not many people around. It doesn't mean the entire state is jam-packed. It's only just outside NYC and Philly. NYC is the main culprit.

Great Lakes are FAR nicer than the ocean, can actually drink the water in a pinch.
Only states in their top ten that don't suck are MN and ND.
