Monhegan Island, Maine, had so many people sick with lyme disease, that they finally eradicated all the deer on the island, which finally put an end to the epidemic on their island.

But for the rest of Maine, lyme disease is increasing exponentially every year.

More cases are happening along all Maine's coastal areas than inland, but I'm not sure if that's because there are fewer lyme carrying deer ticks inland or fewer people to get bitten by them.

There are several wild species of cockroach in Maine. Here is a link to a picture of one species that is found regularly on milkweed, the Dusky Cockroach, Ectobius lapponicus http://www.bio.umass.edu/biology/kun...0/DSC_0208.JPG ... To the average person this species looks like a German cockroach in size and shape but it is in an entirely different Family. It is an invasive species of both Canada and the USA which arrived here from europe. There are only about 10 species of domesticated cockroaches which become pests because we have made our houses attractive environments. Several thousand species are found in the wild around us. I regularly see two species in the Scarborough Marsh Sanctuary off Pinepoint Road.

Pet cockroaches?

I don't see them ever taking the place of my beloved Fifi! They'll never purr the way she can or keep my lap warm on a cold winter's evening.

Such contradictory information in this thread.

A: There are no ticks in Maine.

B: Maine has more Lyme disease victims than trees.

A: Cockroach? Never seen one.

B: There are over 2,000 species of cockroach in the average Maine bedroom.

They only "appear" to be flying only after you've been there for a while.

Plenty of Lyme in Maine. It's also now documented in the Carolinas and other more southern points. https://www.cdc.gov/lyme/stats/maps.html

Ticks also carry powassan and babieosis.

I'd say this is as bad as it gets. Common bugs such as cockroaches not common in New England since our winters can freeze.

I've never seen a cockroach in Maine. Google "mahogany bird" if you want to see a big one. 4" or better in length, some of them. I'd grab the flip flop and keep whacking till they were dead.

Incidences of lyme disease have occurred in every County in the State. In Aroostook, several years ago, I recall "reported" at like 41 cases, but estimated actual cases more on the order of 400. More prevalent South and Coastal, but it is everywhere. My father, at 85 years old, just had an incident where it wasn't lyme, powassan or babeiosis, but the doctors diagnosed some OTHER tick borne thing after a full tick panel was completed. Down and out, unable to move for a couple of days, slowly recovered after a battery of antibiotics. Blue Hill Hosptial. He's home and fine now, but it was scary.

Well I seen a horse fly;
I seen a dragon fly;
I seen a house fly.

I seen all that too.
I seen a peanut stand;
And heard a rubber band;
I seen a needle that winked its eye.

But I've been, done, seen about everything;
When I see a cockroach fly.
What'd you say boy?
I said when I see a cockroach fly.

I seen a front porch swing;
Heard a diamond ring;
I seen a polka dot railroad tie.

But I've been, done, seen about everything;
When I see a cockroach fly.

We have no cockroaches here.

You can mash potatoes but you can't pea soup.
