Some of the old timers I hear using that (cough, cough; NOT me of course ) use it as "across the street" is directly across and "across the way" is one way or the other and not straight across. Could be just this area, but I find that is generally how it is used up here.

Took a drive today and ended up at Bugaboo Creek in Bangor for lunch. Nice lunch, but the talking Bison head FREAKED out my 5 year old. He was looking at the stuffed heads on the wall and the "Bill the Buffalo" (even though it is an American Bison head) started talking and moving. He never touched his food.

On the way back I stopped on the side of Rt. 1 outside of Presque Isle to take a couple of photos of the snowbanks we have in some areas. If you notice it isn't tapering off to nothing just behind the Suburban like a drifted area does. And yes, that is a full sized 4X4 Suburban I drive.

On the way downstate, they were blowing it back a bit with the big blower and I wish there hadn't been a bunch of cars following me at the time. That is ONE pass with the blower for height. It is mounted on the front of a giant articulating payloader and was throwing snow a God awful distance.
