I'd get something like this. Easy to attach metal studs to on the inside and add insulation sheetrock and windows. Maybe even a pitched roof. Park two side by side and blow out a wall for more space. Might even pick one up for $2,000.

buy acreage of forest in 'treegrowth', drop a 'portable' cabin on it, and still keep it all in treegrowth.
where would be a good place to look for the definitions of 'portable cabin' that will qualify for low taxes.

Anything with a trailer license plate is "portable".

There are still places in Maine with no zoning at all. Do what you want within reason.

I do not think that 'portable' is really defined anywhere. Rather 'permanent structure' is much better defined.

Some places will tax you on anything with wheels, as a vehicle.

And as has been pointed out, some areas will view anything on wheels as

I have seen cabins on skids used for the purpose of avoiding the 'permanent structure' issue.

Looks very nice.

A cabin should fit in there nicely.

Ok, no trailers, but needs to be portable......... How about a shipping container. Especially handy in situations where a foundation is not permitted, but a mobile structure is permitted. You can have it dropped off for "storage" reasons. Add a few windows, insulation, doors and you got a camp. It would still be portable, plenty of used ones around. The shipping companies only use them "x" number of times, then retire them. Just have a truck drop one off.

Cheap - 40 foot x 9'6" high for $1200 bucks

I like this floorplan.

- one 40' container
- no cuts needed for large windows
- put sliding glass door in front and back
