I like to enjoy a thin slice of fruitcake cut with a very sharp knife. Together with a cup of eggnog and some Mannheim Steamroller music it sets the season. I have not been able to find any fruitcake this year. JJ Nissen went out of business. Their fruitcake was above average. When I worked in Canada the Irving stations had excellent fruitcakes that weighed about three pounds and came in metal tins. For a few years they were also sold in Maine at Irving stations.

My all time favorite fruitcakes were made for the Herters Company in Minnesota. They said the recipe was Berte Herter's own family recipe. They used high ground lingonberries only. (No low ground lingonberries for the Herter Family.) They also advertised that no trash fillers were used in their fruitcakes.

Where can I buy a fruitcake in 2012?

I think I still have one from 1978 when I lived in Minnesota. It still probably tastes the same.

You can try Harry & David's:

Cheesecakes, Cakes & Pies | Chocolates & Sweets | Harry & David[tm]-[pc]-harry-and-david-[cat]-cakes-[e]_harry-and-david-cakes-fruit-_-26f0982cdce24888bcf3a4924b8f3d9f#Cakes:s=rating= 1

I've never gotten their fruit cake, but their fruit is good.

That link got messed up pretty good, try this:

Harry and David Gourmet Gifts, Gift Baskets, Fresh Fruit Gifts, Gourmet Chocolates and Monthly Gift Clubs.

My mother used to make fruit cakes as Christmas gifts....I loved getting it and wished I had one now.

The ladies at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Dexter...used to sell their fruitcakes (mail order) as a fund raiser...but the stopped doing that. The price of the ingredients probably made it an "expensive" fund raiser.

I was going to suggest Friends and Family Market in Ellsworth; they might have it. Call first. Have you called the deli at Hannaford's or Shaw's?

Frank's Bakery in Bangor sells 1 lb and 2 lb. Give them a call to make sure they haven't sold out or to place an order. (207) 947-4594 I believe it's $12.95 for l lb. and $24.95 for a 2 lb. I didn't see it on their website, but they do sell it.

You could call local churches and see if any of them are planning a Christmas bake sale.

Put this event on your calendar for next year. http://bangordailynews.com/event/fif...cake-bake-off/
