Our target is to live on or have access to lake, river or a
small pond. Which one would have the lowest taxes? We see
lot of river front property for sale.......seems to me this could
be a risk! Our area of interest is a 50 mile radius around Bangor.
Newport sounds good...............open for comments

I'm not far from Newport on the Sebec River. It's not difficult to find something on a river, pond or lake and prices here are quite good at this time.

Not sure how they do it Downstate, but a lot of the townships and towns up North do not YET make a distinction between waterfront and non-waterfront property when it comes to taxes OR figuring tax value. I have a feeling when they figure out the way the rest of the Country does it they will change that as well.

Newport drains their lake on a regular basis. I don't know of any other town that does that. Somebody goes looking for ancient fishing weirs and other early evidence of human activity.

Up North here, all of the lakes are drained in anticipation of the coming snow and ice. Good time to go searching for dry-ki, stone implements and arrowheads. The flint on Kineo was prized by Indian tribes all over the east. Many implements are found in the riverbeds and below the high water up north.

If you can, look for property with the house separated from the water. Like a house then a road, then your waterfront. It is valued much, much less, and you still have the benefit of waterfront and a dock.

A property sold and beavers had dammed up the little brook on the property. Somebody said, I hope they diodn't calll it waterfront. I replied, "Hey if it will float a duck - - " and that's as far as I got. The other coffee drinkers cracked up.
