We have a noreaster in progress and with the wind out of the northeast the waves come down Old Orchard beach at an angle. Surfers are out today. You can surf for miles along the beach. Getting back up to the north end for another run is no problem. Just grab the skeg on your board and drag the nose in the snow. Your board won't get scratched up.

Mainers do not deny winter.

Great post! Here in NC they are out even when the local news crews are filming the approaching hurricane from the beaches. I just go down and watch, though if I am here for another one, I AM getting a pair of safety goggles to go over my glasses.. that "sandblast" effect did a number on them last storm.

Was great for the skin though... even though it was a bit chillier than I like for wearing a swimsuit, I was glad I had one on under my jeans... I stripped to the suit and turned in the wind, letting Mother Nature do a dermabraison on the whole body. my back loved it!

Dunno about doing it in a nor'easter though.. or if there is enough sand on the beach for it to work? I never GOT to a beach when I was up there... but I was told they tend to be rocky.. and if the wind blew enough to throw THEM around... well don't think it would be too good for my hide! LOL

The sand does not blow. It is covered with snow right down to the tide line. Then it's frozen until the next tide comes in. The only bare skin on these surfers is around the eyes and the only dermabrasion that happens is when a big comber slams their bodies into the clam shells and rips the wet suit open.

Great post NMLM! While I myself wouldn't be doing any surfing at any time, never mind winter, it's great to know that there are those that will I suppose. lol Seriously, that's awesome! Defying all logic!
