I hate my job. Absolutely HATE it. Each day that I get up, I think to myself about the type of jobs I've had and which one(s) I like the best. I have to come to the realization that despite the fact that most don't pay well, the only time I've ever been happy going to work was when I worked with animals. (I worked at a boarding kennel and LOVED every single second of it...even cleaning the dog doo.)

So, I am trying to find a good animal related job. I don't mean a vet, or vet tech...been there, done that, (tech), and that's more about dealing with people who don't listen to the vet anyway and are repeat visitors or heart wrenching moments when a little girl's pet dies on the operating table...yah, I can't do that again.

I want to work with and around animals. Domestic animals probably since I don't have a degree to deal with wild ones...although totally willing to learn. Totally willing to start at the bottom. I just want to work around them again.

Does anyone out there know of any place in Maine...say from as far north as Old Town, far west as Corinth, far east as Bar Harbor or Belfast area and far south as...not quite to Augusta, that may have something?

Maine is filled with animals...yes, mostly wildlife...but surely there are jobs out there for people like me? Maybe a ranch hand or feed and care for someone's goats or some dog walking thing or a kennel I've not heard of?

Like I said, I know it's a long shot but, it's worth a try to ask.

Thank you for your attention.

Greater Androscoggin Humane Society in Lewiston lists a few employment opportunities on its website:

About Us | Greater Androscoggin Humane Society
Employment Opportunities | Greater Androscoggin Humane Society

Greater Androscoggin Humane Society is outstanding. The people there are so easy to talk with and very reasonable and kind! We adopted our little dog from them.

Though it is a little ways out of your specified area, Lewiston has quite a few job opportunities. Are you on the email list from Camp Keyes/National Guard (Augusta) for job opportunities and services for military veterans? I can forward the most recent one we get if you'd like. There are more employers looking for workers than one might expect.

I'm sorry you've been unhappy with your current job, and I hope you find something more suited to your preferences!

you seem to be up on dog training techniques-
create a company name- like the "bangor dog whisperer" make a facebook page, send out thousands of friend requests,,,and see what type of response you get-
for "dog behavior" and training- targeting difficult dogs/pets

make a youtube page of you working with your dogs-video clips,,,so others can see how you work with dogs

many dog owners dont take the time, or have the know how to work with their dogs

I have actually been brainstorming with a few friends of mine about doing just this. One of them has her own dog walking/pet sitting service in Miami so I'm picking her brain.

I would love to do this. I'm trying to figure out everything I need to have in place, (licensed? Insured?), and know what I would love to expand it to but the big hurdle for me is: marketing.

I know how to work FB very well. I'm ok on Twitter. I have had blogs forever so a website is no problem and I already have ideas for a YouTube video. Just need a good artist, cartoon type.

And what is the need in my area?

And wouldn't I have to be certified before I go ahead and just call myself a dog trainer? Is there anywhere in Bangor that I can get this? Or near Bangor?

In the meantime, I need to find something else because this job is going to put me in to an early grave.

Does Bangor have a Humane Society? I should go volunteer there. I've done that before in other places.

Heck, maybe I'll harass Petco until they hire me...just let me work with animals!!!

But I'm even willing to do things like shovel horse manure if it will get me out and working with animals again. (Although I know nothing about horses except that we have an understanding: They know that I know nothing about them and I understand that they know that.)

I'm not afraid of any animal...well, those with 8 legs aren't my thing and I won't work with them and maybe I need to learn more about moose before I get all willing to do any work with them...which I can't imagine I would need to work with moose...but any other animal, no problem.

I passed up a job at the Lab for the job I have now. The money was better here. But, there are days I kick myself for doing that. What a stupid move on my part. So I think that bridge is burnt.

THANK YOU for the list of the shelters! That's great! That's going to give me a lot to look in to and maybe get some more potential leads.

Casco, ME is a heck of a long drive. It would have to be something that I could make a decent living at, (meaning, be able to save up so I could one day move closer). Plus, there's that horse thing again...if they are willing to train, I'm willing to learn. But, we'll see what they say. I wouldn't be doing the tours because, again, horses know that I don't know them. I've ridden horses...trust me, they know. But, someone has to clean up the joint.

Same with the other link...surely it's not all family run...right? Someone would let an outsider come in and clean up...right?

Thanks for all the links!

Good luck, 3 Wolves.

I hear ya on working with animals. I've never done it myself, but I've often thought about it....usually on the days when it seems the only friendly face I see is my mutt's.

How about a "delivery" service to pick up the dog, when it has to be put down

i had to bring my dog in after 14 years, to put her down, it wasnt easy, and i put it off for too long

I would have paid dearly to have my dog picked up-so my last memory of her was at the house- not bringing her to a vet to be incinerated

make up a name "the last walk" delivery service..

You're welcome. lol I didn't mean drive back and forth to Casco. My suggestion is stay where you are until you've saved enough money to be able to move a lot closer to your next job. Someone has to clean up the horse stalls and feed and brush the horses (seems like it would take a lot of family members)....not sure how many horses would be boarded at the farms that have horse boarders.... The place in Casco looked like a fun place to be. It wouldn't hurt to apply at the lab again--the worst that could happen is nothing. You might be surprised. There's some kind of doggie place--on 1A toward Ellsworth on the right...can't remember the name of it. There's also a night-time emergency vet clinic in Brewer near the high school. Starting your own pet business could be a good idea. It could take a while before you establish yourself and are making enough $ to not have another job.

Bangor sure does have a Humane Society and it's a good one. I think the manager's name is Debbie Bell. She sometimes appears on news spots on TV when there are special needs at the Shelter.
