Apparently a recent evaluation by the USGS has downgraded the famous Somes Sound Fyord on Mount Desert Island to a dwarf fyord. Just like Pluto, its been down sized.

Apparently it has all the elements of a real fyord except for not having a dead zone in the middle because there should be a sandbar at the entrance that prevents water from getting in and out except at a little bit at high tide.

This makes it now called a fyard---which is a kind of Dwarf Fyord.

But not to be stopped. A local radio personality is collecting funds to make up a granite monument to the Grateful Dead(rock group you remember), with the names of contributors in the stone. Dropping this in the middle of the sound at the deepest part, will once again give it a proper DEAD ZONE, so it can again be a FYORD.

Oh, for Pete's sake. Is this for real?

Back in the day, if it was available, we liked to hang on the guest mooring part way up the Sound for the night. There's a place to land a skiff and you can have a nice climb to the top for the view.

"O" or "A," Somes Sound is a nice destination.

No Kidding. The article was on the front page of the MDIslander, the sister publication of the Ellsworth American, last Friday.
