Hello! my friend and I are seeking a cabin on a lake where we can spend a week with our 3 dogs (two small, mixed breed dogs, and one medium-sized mixed breed). We prefer to be pretty isolated. We are mature, responsible professional women both of whom live and work in NYC. Neither of us has an all-wheel drive vehicle. And, we don't really like to climb up spiral staircases, as we are not youngsters! Does anyone know of any places we might rent? We have been looking on HomeAway and on Craigslist already, but haven't found anything. Thanks.

Hi.

On the Water in Maine Inc. - A Full Service Vacation Rental Agency

I haven't had any association with these guys for several years, but from an employee's perspective, they were very good to deal with then. Can't imagine things have changed.

I'm still unclear if CD frowns on posting links to rental info, but I suppose I'll find out... :-)

I'm assuming the reason you haven't found anything is because the dog factor... because there are tons of places, ski lodges, cabins, houses, etc listed on craigslist and homeaway like you mentioned. Look more towards the ski mountains than on the coasts because most of the coastal vacation homes are only open in the summer.

Gently, nope. There are plenty of vacation rentals that welcome pets.

Nope, again, gently. There are plenty of coastal lake & pond rentals available through the winter months. We actually do winterize a few camps/ cottages here. And that's winterize in the sense of keeping open through the winter, not closing down for the winter.

If the OP is looking on Craigslist, yes, it's going to mean more work on her part to find the rental she's seeking. It might cost a bit more to go through a vacation rental company, maybe not. Just one of the positives of using a vacation rental place is they have a large pool of properties. You plug in your details, pet friendly, etc., and their search engine does the finding. You can know right away the dates any given property is booked or otherwise not available; likewise, when it is available.

Besides, it seems to me that any/all mountains region rentals will likely be booked and pricey this time of year.

Good luck to the OP.

Believe it or not, we found a vacation rental that looks as though it will perfectly fit our needs. We found it on google! It turns out, it was also on homeaway, but their search engine didn't show it. I am guessing it's because this camp was full booked in February, but had availability in March. We had to compromise on the dates of our trip, but this is just fine, given that it was such a difficult time finding a reasonably priced camp that would accept dogs. thanks for your suggestions and comments.
