Is rabies fairly common in Maine? Just wondering. Here in NC, there have been several rabid foxes caught in our area. One attacked a chihuahua who was being walked by his owner. The dog survived, but is currently in quarantine. I would assume it's fairly common in ME, with the abundance of wildlife there.

Here's a link for rabies stats, it's much more prevalent on the east coast of the country. Hope it helps.

If you have a woodland creature hanging around acting strangely it's best to shoot first and test for rabies later. If you do shoot a suspected rabid animal call the Warden service or animal control officer. Do not handle the animal directly. If you do not own a gun then you shouldn't be living in Maine anyway.

That's right if they's been a little quicker on the draw they could have shot the wolf and saved Old Yeller. Moral to the story is shoot any animal that wanders into the yard....just to be sure it doesn't tangle with your Old Yeller.

If possible, don't shoot the animal in the head. I believe the brain is what is tested for rabies.
