Hi everyone,

We are considering going to Bar Harbor/Nova Scotia in August for about a 6 day honeymoon. Any opinions as to whether this sounds like a good idea or not? (We started just with Bar Harbor, but then read about the ferry to Nova Scotia). Any suggestions on what to do/ where to stay? Is Portland the best airport to fly in to?

Thanks!!

Here you go - I'd like to do that myself.

Portland and Bar Harbor, Maine to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia - CAT Ferry

In Nova Scotia, I recommend staying in Halifax at the Lord Nelson. The rooms are nice, you can get a good view of the harbor, and the hotel has a good traditional English pub. It's within easy walking distance of the waterfront restaurants, and across the street from the Victorian Garden.

If you're not city folk, get up to Cape Breton, a special place, with stunning and beautiful scenery. The people are very friendly, lots of great music, ceilidhs, and wonderful B&Bs in the summer. My personal favorite places there are Ingonish Bay and Mabou Beach.

Check out the Duncreigan Inn in Mabou - quite romantic:
Cape Breton Accommodations - Duncreigan Country Inn Of Mabou - Ceilidh Trail - Nova Scotia - Mull Cafe & Deli

In Ingonish there are many rental cottages and good hiking. I recommend staying away from the Keltic Lodge unless you love a country club must-wear-dinner-jacket kind of place.

Gaelic is actively spoken on the island and there's a Gaelic College in Antigonish. You'll find great fish stew almost everywhere.

I hope you have lots of fun planning your trip.

And don't forget Peggy's Cove - pretty, little fishing village - very picturesque.

We took the Cat from Bar Harbor one time. It moves incredibly fast for that size boat. Yarmouth is a cute town. It seems like it is always foggy. Mavilette Beach Provencial Park is about 35 minutes from Yarmouth, going toward Digby. Digby is a very nice little fishing town. Known as the scallop capital of the world. It has it's Scallop Day Festivals in early August. Alot of Hotels there. We would go to St. Johns, New Brunswick and take the Princess of Acadia ferry to Digby, Nova Scotia and then go to our summer house in New Albany about an hour away. That ferry ride is a 3 hour ride across the Bay of Fundy.Lunenburg is a really cool city also alot of shops, and Rissers Beach is a beautiful beach not far from there. Another nice place is Annapolis Royal...rolling hills and beautiful gardens. All of Nova Scotia is wonderful.. We always enjoy going to the smaller towns. Halifax is nice, but you really don't get the real beauty of Nova Scotia there.....Hope you have a great time!!!!

Thanks for the suggestions! Keep them coming!! If you had 5 or 6 full days, how would you allot your time between Bay Harbor/Nova Scotia?

We booked our trip. We will be in the area from a Monday-Saturday in August (17-22) and are trying to figure out:
1) Where to stay in Bar Harbor
2) How to split our time between Bar Harbor/Nova Scotia
3) Must sees/to do's in both locations
Thanks!!

You could consider flying into Bangor which would save 2 hours driving time in each direction. While in Nova Scotia, if you plan to drive up the Lighthouse route, stop in Lunnenburg. We stayed there once and loved it. Check out their marine museum. Take at least one full day in the Bar Harbor area. There are free busses you can ride to go over to the Jordan Pond house or just ride around and see some of the scenery.

I realize that there is a lot to do in Bar Harbor/the surrounding area and have searched this forum. I am trying to get specific ideas for things that are highly recommended, etc. Of course, we'll do obviously things like go to Arcadia and will keep other things that have been mentioned in mind.
