Hi,
I am moving to maine to enjoy the Coast and its abundant wildlife. I have read many aggressive replies from Mainers on this forum to those who simply are conscious and choose not to consume animal flesh or kill animals. There are people on this forum who claim to be from Maine who actually think they have the right to hunt on others' private property. I am wondering if this is a majority or if this is in certain areas specifically. It is really strange. I have never lived anywhere where people "expected" to be allowed on private property for any reason let alone hunting.

It depends on the property. It sounds as if you're thinking of hunting as a single violent act of killing an animal. It's much, much more than that. If you were to buy a piece of property in Maine where the owner has allowed others to hunt, and that tradition of hunting that land has been enjoyed by many, then yes, you can expect people will be upset.

Incidently, I don't know that you have a good understanding of the entire matter when you say something like this:

"who actually think they have the right to hunt on others' private property"

People are given permission to hunt on others' property, and Mainers understand that permission very well.

I think you might be exaggerating the responses. The state of Maine and most right thinking Mainers recognize the right of any property owner to post their land against hunting or trespassing. There are specific procedures for doing so because there's a long held tradition among many hunting friendly Mainers to allow it.
If you do not want hunting, then you have every right to properly post your land and you can reasonably expect support to enforce that. You can not have any say over neighbors that comply with hunters access.

this is nothing new, much of the homes on the immediate homes have been bought by out of staters, and most will respect no tresspassing signs,,,on your lot,
however, if you were to buy a 50 acre parcel, in the middle of traditional hunting grounds, and you posted it,,,then dont be surprised if many neighbors arent very friendly

portland area may be a good match for ya

We once shot a moose up at Demo Pond as a truck load of leaf peepers were photographing her. What could we do? It was Thursday for crying out loud!

My point is that hunting and target shooting are a deeply ingrained cultural thing up here. You have to go with the flow. Most places below the Volvo Line are the same way.

It's hard for the unconscious Mainers to reply to much of anything so you probably shouldn't expect to hear from them.
