Your budget will help you narrow down that list.

unsure of wage at moment, but at a guess I'm looking at earning ~USD60K a year.

All of MD is not crime ridden, but more urban areas do tend to be here a little (ok, a lot) more than urban areas in which I have lived in the past. There are some nice areas of Laurel, I didn't say there weren't. It can be a bit sketchy, so you really want to try to research the exact area. IMO, I wouldn't move to Silver Springs. Besides the traffic being a nightmare, the neighborhoods there tend to be more sketchy than that of Laurel (and yes, I have lived there while stationed at Walter Reed several years ago). I really like Bowie. Depending on the size of house you need to rent, you will be paying about 1/3 - 1/2 of that income you listed on rent and utilities. Even after taxes you should be ok as long as you don't have a couple of high car payments, etc. I am guessing that average-ish rent on a home here is about $2k a month. A studio apartment in Silver Springs was running about $950 a month ten years ago. I love being able to get to so many great places to shop, eat, visit fairly quickly. This area is great for that as it is difficult to be bored here with so much to do
