Baltimore - 25 min to downtown vs. 45 min to the Mall in DC. People work all over (heck even people in PA work in Baltimore and that doesn't make their communities "Baltimore suburbs").

People work PA work, play, and claim Baltimore teams as their own.

So in other words...Baltimore
Yes, Columbia is a Baltimore suburb. People in Columbia root for the Ravens and the Orioles. All of the local bars in Columbia have the Ravens logo lit up in neon lights. Laurel is when you start seeing tons of Redskins fans and hearing Go-Go music playing out of cars. Also, people in DC and the surrounding suburbs always describe Columbia as being "far away". I've heard plenty of people in the DC area also sometimes describe Columbia as being "Baltimore".

A huge percentage of black people in Columbia have roots in Baltimore. But there are also a huge number of black folks from NYC and the Tri-State Area and DC as well. Many, many people have lived in Columbia for their entire lives. Plenty of white folks have lived in the area since it was much more rural decades and decades ago.

Columbia is different from DC area suburbs in terms of culture. Montgomery County and Northern Virginia residents carry themselves differently as a group. DC suburbs tend to be full of pretentious status-conscious people who love to brag about where they went to college, what they do for a living, the exotic places they've vacationed etc. Chevy Chase, Bethesda and McLean are like Beverly Hills with their streets lined with expensive exclusive fashion boutiques. Plenty of people in Montgomery County and Northern Virginia look and dress like the soulless looking people from the Ralph Lauren catalog. Status is king in the DC area. People are also more stand-offish as a whole in the DC area.

Columbia is not like this. Tons of people in Columbia have money, but you would never know it because it doesn't define them. Columbia is more casual and down to earth. But Columbia is unique from both DC and Baltimore and is another animal completely. Thats because Columbia was a planned community intended on being inviting to all different types of people regardless of race, class or age. Surprisingly, Columbia lives up to this. In Columbia, rich kids go to the same public schools with kids who live in Section 8 housing. In Columbia, you won't know if someone is filthy rich living in a million dollar home or eating off of foodstamps on Section 8 until you go visit their home.

its funny you say that because 70% of people in Howard County works in Washington D.C......So for you to say that Columbia or Even ELLICOT CITY doesn't have a DC presence you are crazy and funny.......why do you think they call Howard a Baltimore/Washington D.C. suburb
