Quaint college towns in MD? (Westminster, Frostburg: home, colleges, to live)

Looking for a small, quaint college town in Maryland.

Extra preferences (but not necessary): decent intellectual atmosphere, but without a huge abundance of snobbery.

Frostburg is the only small town I can think of located in western Maryland.

Of the colleges (anywhere) in what once were quaint little towns...

The closest I can think of is Shepherdstown, West Virginia. It's across the river from Sharpsburg, MD. It has the B&B's, antique shops and architecture that make it quaint.

Westminster, MD is the home of McDaniel College. A small town, but it has more strip malls than quaintness. Then on the Eastern Shore, there's Washington College in Chestertown. Chestertown is beautiful, but I have no idea about the intellectual atmosphere.

Meh... more kitsch than quaint.

You're describing the small(er) colleges which happen to be located in smaller communities... but none of these communities are the "quaint college town".

btw, I like both towns and Chestertown too...
but "quaint" requires wearing sturdier blinders than I want to live with.

Well, I'll leave it up to Flarm to tell us his/her requirements for "quaint". But I understand your distinction that a "college town" means that a college would completely dominate the town. I don't think Maryland has them in the way new England does.

Princess Anne in Somerset county and Chestertown in Kent. I don't know all that much about Chestertown but I can tell you Princess Anne doesn't have too much of an intellectual atmosphere. I don't see anything particularly wrong with people from Princess Anne though.

You can find them in Virginia and Pennsylvania.

I guess I went into this without really knowing the definition of quaint. Okay okay, at least a hint of quaintness should be required. But more importantly, a small college town located maybe in what seems like the middle of nowhere and with an atmosphere of intelligence higher than an average state college.

It seems like MD is kind of out of the question. Somewhere else within the mid-atlantic region? I've already done most of the research for NY and some for PA. Virginia and the lower states are definitely in question though.

Several places in PA: Carlisle, Gettysburg and Bellefonte (near Penn State but no college in BF) come to mind.
