The population bust really happened about 12 years ago, Wise HS was opened up and took about 1000 kids from Douglass. That dropped the population down to around 1000, what it had been for years. It's down again but mostly due to the families from the attendance area aging out.
Man so Pinkney has been there for quite sometime. I didn't know that about Wise. Pinkney is obviously a great coach to maintain a winning program even after Wise siphoned off half of the student body. And Wise has been the best public football program in the state across all classes for the past several years (except for getting knocked out of the playoffs this season of course).

I know it wouldn't be possible, but imagine if Douglass and Wise were all one school. That football team would be able to take on even the WCAC powerhouses. But once again that is a testament to the coaching job Pinkney has apparently done.

PGCPS has a strange dynamic among its high schools though. It seems like either the high schools are overcrowded and among the largest in the state in terms of enrollment or housed in buildings built in the 1960s and declining in enrollment. It's just strange that the county with the second largest population in the state would operate so many high schools. My numbers may be a little off but in addition to the 10 high schools playing 4A (perfectly logical given PG County's huge student population), they still have two 3A schools, three 2A schools, and five 1A schools. Wouldn't it just make sense to consolidate some of the smaller schools?

It's got to be more cost effective in the long run to build a few larger replacement schools rather than continue to maintain schools built in the 50s and 60s that are way under capacity. Montgomery County only has three schools as low as even 2A and I would think only Poolesville even has a possibility of NOT moving up to 3A after this next realignment (as I mentioned before Damascus is going up to 3A next year and Seneca Valley will be soon to follow when their new facility is opened). The MoCo strategy might be a more successful role model for PG to follow.

Well Fort Hill got it done with a strong defensive performance and better red zone offense. I didn't get to see the game, but it sounded well played.........and horribly officiated as per usual.

Did anyone catch Coach Appel's comments? That is what I meant about "at this point most of the critics should be silenced" in a previous post. He makes me laugh. We have gotten to the point where "haters" and "critics" are people who feel Fort Hill may lose 2 to 3 games and not contend for the state title. But hey, you gotta find your motivation somewhere, right?
