I'm considering the University of Maryland for grad school. I don't know the area that well.

I'm looking for primarily a safe area to live in. Something that is not an outrageous commute and something that might be reasonable for a commute into DC for internship or part time work.

What areas around the University of Maryland would you recommend or recommend that I stay away from?

...Which campus are you considering, College Park, UMB, BC? I presume you're probably considering College Park, but you'll want to specify.

You should be able to find housing in College Park, where you can also access the Metro (rail transit) to commute to DC. Along Route 1 in College Park, you will find many recently built apartment complexes, serving Maryland students. Most are geared towards undergrads, but I believe some are exclusively for grads. Your inquiry should be posted to the Washington DC suburbs of Maryland sub-forum. There are several posters there who can help you.

In speaking with my niece who has friends in school there the apartments surrounding the campus, which were not there when I was in school, are very expensive. She said her friend pays $1,000 a month and shares a bedroom, the other bedroom also has 2 woman and there is one bathroom. Yikes.

I lived in group houses in nearby Silver Spring, which has Metro access to DC. It was maybe 20 minutes to campus, downtown SS is now much better than I was there with all sorts of stuff to do, it's like a mini-city. I'd steer away from places like Greenbelt or Beltsville, they are closer but not as nice.

Greenbelt or Silver Spring come to mind as places to live.

It wasn't that long ago when many would have advised you to avoid College Park itself.
