Where is the best place to live on the South Shore? We are moving to Mass this summer. Schools, Housing, Jobs.

A budget and housing needs would help. Hingham is the Holy Grail of the South Shore. Top notch schools, beautiful homes, quaint downtown and lots of people with lots of money and one of the best commuting areas on the south shore- train, boat from Hull and easy access to route 3. Next would be Duxbury, while both are oceanside communities, Duxbury's beaches are superior to Hingham. Cohasset is another. Parents in all three of these towns often opt to send their kids to private school. Thayer Academy, Noble and Greenough and Milton Academy are all popular picks. For lower middle class living, Norwell and Hanover are good picks. Solid schools and a variety of home prices. You will still find well heeled families in these communities but there are also regular middle class people who are looking for a solid community to raise their children. Scituate is an option but commuting is not an easy feat. Marshfield is decent as well. Both Scituate and Marshfield are oceanside towns with a more economically diverse population than the previously mentioned communities.

????????????????????????

Seriously, you are not going to get anywhere by asking "what is the best place?". Best for what? I might tell you the Germantown projects in Quincy, I mean some people need access to certain things...

I didn't mean "lower middle class" LOL What I meant was a middle class community with lower priced options. I probably should have characterized the other 3 as "upper middle class" and left it at that.

My bad. Sometimes the fingers are faster than the brain.

Just didn't want anyone to be given false hopes/impressions. Actually, all of those towns would be considered "upper middle class". You will not find any bargains in Hanover or Norwell either, even if they are not as pricy as Hingham and Duxbury. "Middle class" would be Braintree or maybe Pembroke, Marshfield, Hanson, etc. "Lower middle class" would be Weymouth or Rockland. Even those are broad generalizations, but most of the bargains will be found in those places. The "above average" places have not seen much of a drop in prices.

Chuck it really depends on your budget and what you are looking for. a $300,000 house in some of the towns above will get your a very small house and yard but if you move away from Boston you would get a larger house plus more yard.

Good luck in your search

I spent summers in Cohasset growing up as my grandparents lived there. They were certainly not upperclass financially but the family had been there for years.. If I won the mega bucks I would make an offer on the house that they use to live in. I loved the town. They were about a 5 minute walk from the village.. My aunts and uncles all graduated from Cohasset HS. You don't say if you will be working in Boston but there is train service right in downtown of Cohasset to Boston.. I also have relatives living in Scituate which is a nice community too but I think a bit less pricey for houses.
